SAT-Based Verification of LTL Formulas

چکیده
Bounded model checking (BMC) based on satisfiability testing (SAT) has been introduced as a complementary technique to BDDbased symbolic model checking of LTL properties in recent years and a lot of successful work has been done with this approach. The basic idea is to search for a counter example of a particular length and to generate a propositional formula that is satisfied iff such a counter example exists. An over approximation of the length that need to be checked in order to certify that the system is error free is usually too big, such that it is not practical to use this approach for checking systems that are error free with respect to given properties. Even if we know the exact threshold, for a reasonably large system, this threshold would possibly also be large enough to make the verification become intractable due to the complexity of solving the corresponding SAT instance. This study is on a different direction and the aim of this study is verification of valid properties. We propose an approach to (partly) avoid the use of the completeness threshold as the verification criteria when checking systems that are error free with respect to LTL properties. The benefit of the use of this approach may be very large compared to the use of the completeness threshold. Though, Prasad, Biere and Gupta pointed out in a survey paper [18] that, currently, the strength of SAT-based verification techniques lies primarily in falsification, this study explores the strength of SAT-based techniques for verification and the case study shows that this is a promising approach.

Alternating Automata Semantic Constructions for the Bounded Model Checking of Regular Linear Temporal Logic (Extended Version)
We present two algorithms for bounded model checking of Regular Linear Temporal Logic (RLTL) specifications. Bounded model checking (BMC) is an effective algorithmic method for the verification of finite state systems against temporal specifications expressed in some linear temporal logic, typically LTL. The basis of BMC consists on encoding the existence of a counterexample trace of bounded de...
متن کاملBounded Semantics of CTL and SAT-Based Verification
Bounded model checking has been proposed as a complementary approach to BDD based symbolic model checking for combating the state explosion problem, esp. for efficient error detection [3]. This has led to a lot of successful work with respect to error detection in the checking of LTL, ACTL (the universal fragment of CTL) and ACTL* properties by satisfiability testing [3, 22, 25]. The use of bou...
متن کاملModel Checking with SAT-Based Characterization of ACTL Formulas
Bounded semantics of LTL with existential interpretation and that of ECTL (the existential fragment of CTL), and the characterization of these existentially interpreted properties have been studied and used as the theoretical basis for SAT-based bounded model checking [2, 18]. This has led to a lot of successful work with respect to error detection in the checking of LTL and ACTL (the universal...
متن کاملSAT-Based Explicit LTL Reasoning
We present here a new explicit reasoning framework for linear temporal logic (LTL), which is built on top of propositional satisfiability (SAT) solving. As a proof-of-concept of this framework, we describe a new LTL satisfiability algorithm. We implemented the algorithm in a tool, Aalta v2.0, which is built on top of the Minisat SAT solver. We tested the effectiveness of this approach by demons...
متن کاملGenerating Deterministic ω-Automata for most LTL Formulas by the Breakpoint Construction
Temporal logics like LTL are frequently used for the specification and verification of reactive systems. To this end, LTL formulas are typically translated to nondeterministic Büchi automata so that the LTL verification problem is reduced to a nonemptiness problem of ω-automata. While nondeterministic automata are sufficient for this purpose, many other applications require deterministic ω-auto...
